to China. However it is believed that Buddhist Monks Saichō had already brought
tea seeds from China in the 8-9th Century, but at that time tea was processed
into solid cubical brick and not in powdered or liquid form. At that time, the
powdered form of tea was only popular at Chinese Chan monasteries and was
well-regarded for its revitalizing and healing benefits. Eisai also wrote a
book titled ‘Kissa Yōjōki’ which translates as ‘Drinking Tea for Health’
explaining the numerous health benefits that can be gained from consuming tea.

In
modern days, matcha is often used to flavor and color products such as green
tea ice cream, soba noodles, matcha lattes, and even desserts appearing
everywhere from tea shops, health stores, and coffee shops. While the
consumption of matcha is gradually declining in Japan, it is gaining rapid
popularity in the West. Matcha typically has a higher level of caffeine and
antioxidants than is generally present in green tea as it includes nutrients
